Tenerife is located just of the African coast resulting in the average tempretures off 18 to 25 centigrade all year round. this makes it an ideal winter as well as summer destination.   The island its self is diverse from the wetter more greener north to dryer south and the luner landscape of the Mount Teide national park The cliffs of Los Gigantes.   In days gone by fishing banana and tomatoes were the main income source for the islanders nowadays mass tourism has taken over as the biggest earner.   It is now easier than ever to travel to the island of Tenerife with dailly flights from numerous uk airports.

The resorts

The main resorts in the south are Playa Las Amaricas  Los Cristianos and the smaller ones such as Los gigantes in the north Puerto de la Cruz..  Los Cristianos has a more sedate relaxed pace than its neigbour Las Americas with it discos and Veronicas. Never the less dont be put off by this the area off Las Americas next to Los Cristianos has some of the best hotels and apartments on the island. Los Cristianos has still some of it origins to be seen the church the harbour and fishing fleet which contribute to the different  cosmopolitan feel you get when walking in Los Cristianos. Los Gigantes smaller and quieter has the back drop of the the huge spectacular cliffs. Other resorts which are an exstention of Las Americas are Toriviscas,Porto Colon and Playa Fanabe and Costa Adeje all with bars shops and resteraunts.

  The towns and villages

There are many great towns and villages in Tenerife. The capital of the islands Santa Cruz a mecca for shoppers a bustling city with its vast harbour where you will see cruise liners and cargo ships .  Masca in the south known as the hidden village accessed by a steep winding road. The old capital of La laguna and its many religous monuments and fine buildings throughout the city. Vilaflor   An old canarian village the highest in Spain at 4921ft with its unique architecture the parish church and the Palace of the Lords being a good example off it.     Taganana   a remote village famous for its fresh fish meats and rose wine and cheeses a great place for walkers.   La Oratva  The town is filled with buildings of great historical interest the centre decalared a monument of national interest. Fine building such as the Casa Los Balcones the Conceptcion Parish Church there is also a Botanical Garden La Hijuela del Botanico.  Why not take a trip out of the resorts and visit them.

                   Santa Cruz

With more than 200,000 inhabitants. Its present importance comes from the development of its port and its commercial calling which made it progressively absorb the civic centres of La Laguna until it reached the status of capital at the beginning of the last century Its greatest development was originated by the decree of free ports in 1852 when the consequent intense commercial traffic contributed to the progress of a middle class intent on making the city grow.
Today, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a city with large landscaped areas which preserves the carm of the modernist architecture. Its treelined avenues, parks and squares are ideal for strolling because the green of Santa Cruz complements its peacefulness and the sunny climate which it enjoys all year.

                     Puerto de la cruz
For a few years the city has also had a maritime park designed by Cesar Manrique, where the old trade docks are used for recreation.

Puerto de la cruz is the main tourist resort in the north of the Island. It is a cosmopolitan city with excellent hotels and the great Lago Martianez, an architectural wonder of the renown international artist Cesar Manrique.

In Puerto de la Cruz the modern and the new functional structures coexist with the typical and old corners of the small fisher's town which gave origin to the present city. San Telmo, the Casa de la Aduana (Customs House), the San Felipe Castle and, in general, the whole Ranilla.
The Taoro Park, where the Casino is situated, is a great vegetable area which lies over the city; one can also find the Botanical Garden which dates from 1788 and wards trees and other vegetable species from all five continents.
The Puerto de la Cruz is the preferred meeting-point for amusement and enjoyment of the Island.

La Orotava

The Villa de la Orotava (pop. 36,042) lies on the banana plantations of the Valley which bears its same name. This old town distinguishes itself by its magnificent and monumental architectonic structures, by its characteristic well shaded Canarian patios, squares and ancestral mellow houses.

The old historic centre - declared monument of artistic national interest - must be mindfully visited. The Concepción Parish Church is also a national monument. The Casa de los Balcones (balconies' house) is a jewel of the Island's traditional architecture; in La Orotava one can also find the Documentation Research Centre of Spanish and American crafts.

On the Orotava mountains there are many tourist paths where one can enjoy tracking excursions - some of which reach the great Cañadas del Teide, a protected National Park area.

The town also has a botanical garden - "La Hijuela del Botánico" - with more than 3,000 different tropical and sub-tropical vegetable species mainly of South and Central American, African and Australian origin. In the city centre one can also find the Jardín Victoria (Victorian Garden) - a recreational green area with many walking paths amid trees and flowers with its famous Carrara Marble Mausoleum designed by the French architect Adolph Coquet in 1882.

It counts with three beautiful dark-sand beaches - El Bollulllo, Martín Alonso and El Rincón - which are rarely crowded.
                             LA Laguna
La Laguna (pop. 125,183) is Tenerife's Province second most important city. It is the old Capital of the Island and seat of the Adelantados, situated on the Aguere Valley amid a beautiful country. It is also the cultural and religious Capital, due to the fact that it lodges the San Fernando University and the province's Bishopric. Its urban design its neatly arranged. The whole city is full of outstanding architectural monuments, palaces and traditional houses of the XVII and XVIII centuries.

Among its religious buildings the most outstanding are The Cathedral, the Santo Domingo and the Concepción Churches - this latter one a historical and artistic monument; one can also find the Church of the Holy Christ and the San Miguel Chapel.

History and art in La Laguna are to be found in the Casa Ossuna Museum, the Friends of the Country Economic Society Museum, the Concepción Church's Museum and the Cathedral's Museum.

La Laguna's Municipal boundaries extend to the towns of Tejina and Valle Guerra - very rich agricultural areas - as well as Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, which have become tourist resorts with first class hotels, natural swimming pools and extraordinary landscapes. Areas such as La Cuesta and Taco, where part of the industries of the Island have been situated in the last few years, are also part of La Laguna.

Tenerife enjoys one of the world's best and diverse climates normally found only on huge continents. All around the year, the fresh and humid Trade Winds wafting over the Canary Islands keep the temperatures down to an agreeably mild level of 22,3º C. The combination of these Trade Winds, the sea breeze and the refrigerant Gulf current produce warm but not suffocating Summers and temperate Winters, with temperatures between 17º C and 21º C. This characteristic Canarian climate produces some unique situations: Snow falling on the hills -while you may be enjoying the fantastic beaches only a few kilometres away.
